Get out of your Comfort Zone!

One of my favorite cartoons when I was little, was the very educational Magic School Bus. Probably one of the best catchphrases of almost all time that I still really love to this day is from the silly show.

Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy! – Ms. Frizzle, The Magic School Bus

If you have not seen this cartoon, you should check it out. It is very educational.

That quote has really stuck with me and can be applied in almost every aspect of a person's life. It is kind of just a more fun way to say get out of your comfort zone.

When I first came to South Korea to teach, I probably did about 2 -3 hours of research online before applying for jobs. I have a habit (bad or good depending on how you look at it) of making very last-minute decisions. This is something that I am trying to change, but the decision to come to Korea is one that I have not regretted.

Even when I was in University and decided to study abroad in Florence, I applied the last day applications were being accepted and never once expressed regret about that decision. I got to live in the fantastic Italian countryside and backpack Europe with people I consider lifetime friends. These were experiences that I will be telling stories about for the rest of my life.

These huge decisions completely removed me from anything comfortable or familiar, but I have not regretted them.

Some advice for anybody traveling (long or short term).

Get out of your comfort zone!

Try that odd-looking and maybe even bad-smelling food all the locals are eating, talk to your fellow travelers, look like an idiot trying to say something in a different language and just have fun with it.

Traveling is not just about seeing all the hot tourist attractions. It’s about the experience, the culture, and the people. To fully experience these things won’t always be easy and comfortable, but I promise you it will be worth it.

Do you have any stories or experiences that brought you out of your comfort zone?

Cheers!
